What is Scaling and Root Planing?
To explain the process, you first must understand the way your teeth sit in your mouth. As you know, there are roots that anchor the teeth in the bone. Above the root is the gum tissue in your mouth-this is where periodontal disease strikes.
When you develop deposits of plaque below the gum line, it will eventually harden into a tough material that cannot be removed with dental floss. This material will contain microorganisms and toxins that can severely damage your teeth and gum.
As this material is deposited, your gum tissue will retract from it, causing you to develop pockets between the gum tissue and the roots of your teeth. These pockets will collect food and other debris, causing more problems. And, perhaps worst of all, this takes place below the gum line where you cannot reach with a toothbrush.
The process of scaling and root planing involves using a specialized tool to remove the deposits below the gum line. Once these deposits are gone, the gum tissue will eventually reattach to the tooth, closing the pocket that had developed.
