What is family dentistry?

While there is a little bit of a difference between family dentistry and general dentistry, the terms are used almost interchangeably more often than not. This also means that a lot of people don’t know what either of them truly is. Never fear, we are here to help! A lot of dentists tend to keep a certain age range on who they treat, whether its sticking to young children, adults, or mature patients. However, a family dentist has a much wider range, usually treating patients from all of these groups!

What do they do?

A family dentist looks at a lot of aspects of oral health. We keep plaque at a minimum at all ages, find and treat cavities, and promote the health of gums in all ages as well. We are often considered the first level of protection and prevention when it comes to issues within the mouth, so it is important that you see us regularly, at least twice a year.

We will do a deep cleaning when you visit and make sure that everything is how it should be. We will take x-rays at your check-up to make sure that there is no budding decay or infection below the gum line or beneath the surface of your teeth, along with a visual inspection of each tooth to check for problems.

If there is an issue, such as a budding cavity, we will have caught it pretty early at that point and would be able to take the best care of it before it causes you a lot of pain and a potentially worse procedure to remedy it. A filling is much less worrisome than a more advanced procedure such as an implant or root canal treatment. If those are necessary, though, you are still in great hands, and there is no need to worry. At times, if we see a need for it, we can provide a fluoride treatment to seal and protect your teeth in a way you cannot quite get at home.

Excellent Dental Specialists are just that, excellent! We are dedicated to your family and ensuring your health and comfortability in our care. Our staff has 65 years of experience that give us the knowledge to be sure that we are giving correct diagnoses and providing only the best treatment.
