Length of Recovery Process for Implants

Dental Implant healing in jaw by San Antonio dentist at Excellent Dental Specialists.Dental implants are a treatment for replacing missing teeth. This incredible treatment provides a modern-day alternative to bridges and dentures. Dental implants use small titanium posts, which we surgically place into your jawbone. As you heal, your bone gradually fuses to the posts. This process, called osseointegration, is natural and is essential for the success of your dental implants. At Excellent Dental Specialists, we provide dental implants to meet many different tooth replacement needs. While implants are incredibly popular, there are still many questions surrounding them. One of the most common questions we get is how long the recovery process is.

How Long is Recovery from Dental Implant Surgery?

The exact length of recovery from dental implant surgery varies from patient to patient. On average, the time between 2 to 6 months. There are multiple factors that determine the length of your recovery. One of the biggest factors is how many implant posts are placed. Typically, the more posts, the longer the recovery process. If you need a bone graft before the placement of your dental implants, this adds surgery and additional recovery time, which then lengthens the implant process.

As you heal from implant surgery, a natural process called osseointegration occurs. This is the process in which your jawbone fuses to your implant posts. Osseointegration is not an instant process. Instead, it occurs gradually during the recovery process. As your jawbone fuses to the implant posts, your implants are stabilized within your jaw, which then enables them to provide secure support for your dental restorations. It can take approximately six months for your bone to fully fuse with the posts. During your recovery, several follow up visits help to ensure that this process is occurring properly and that there are no complications. Once you have fully healed, we can then begin the process for placing your final restorations.

What Can Affect My Recovery?

Right after your surgery is completed, you are provided with specific instructions to follow. These instructions help you to deal with common post-surgical issues. They will also help you with what to eat, what to avoid eating, and how to properly take care of your surgical wounds. It is important that you follow these instructions to avoid complications during your recovery. Issues that can affect recovery include
•  Tobacco use. Tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and more can all slow the ability of your body to heal effectively. Slowed healing can greatly increase your risk of developing infections. Smoking can also lead to a condition known as dry socket. This condition occurs when the clot becomes dislodged, leaving you vulnerable to bacterial infection.
•  Alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption can impact the coagulation of your blood.
•  The foods you eat. During recovery, especially in the early stages, it is recommended that you eat soft foods. Foods that are hard, crunchy, chewy, or sticky can cause significant pain. Soft, easy to chew foods avoid unnecessary discomfort. It is also highly recommended to eat a well-balanced diet to ensure that you get the nutrients essential for a proper recovery.
•  Oral hygiene. When you ignore oral hygiene during recovery, your risk for infection greatly increases.

With successful recovery, you are left with strong, stable replacement roots that can provide secure support for your replacement teeth. For more information on dental implants, and to find out if this treatment is right for you, call Excellent Dental Specialists today at (210) 598-8933.
