How Sleep Apnea Can Affect Your Life! Why You Shouldn't Put Off Seeing a Specialist

Snoring husband keeping his wife awake and in need of sleep apnea treatment by his San Antonio dentist at Excellent Dental Specialists. For the millions of Americans who are suffering from sleep apnea, the first clue that they have this condition is the irritated nudge of their shoulder when their partner tries to jar them awake due to their snoring. However, sleep apnea isn’t just about keeping your significant other awake all night due to your sawing of wood; it’s a potentially deadly condition that occurs when your airway closes off, forcing you to wake up gasping and choking for air. Many people aren’t even aware that they’re suffocating in their sleep, which is why we here at Excellent Dental Specialists are determined to educate our patients about the dangerous complications of this nighttime sleep disorder.

The Dangers of Sleep Apnea

There are three main types of sleep apnea that you may encounter in your life. The most common type is called obstructive sleep apnea and happens when the muscles in your airway become so relaxed that your throat closes off and you stop breathing. 85 percent of all sleep apnea sufferers, up to 4 percent of the American population, have this type of sleep apnea.

There is also central sleep apnea, which is when the muscles that control your breathing stop working due to missed signals from your brain. Unlike obtrusive sleep apnea, which is extremely common, only 0.4 percent of all people have this type of sleep apnea. Lastly, there’s complex sleep apnea syndrome, which is the remaining 15 percent of people with sleep apnea and is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Signs of Sleep Apnea

Signs that you may have sleep apnea include snoring, an unexplained sore throat, trouble sleeping at night, daytime fatigue and difficulty staying awake during the daytime, mood changes and irritability, headaches in the morning, and gasping and choking for air at night when you’re trying to sleep. People who are more likely to have sleep apnea are older people, men, people who are overweight or obese, persons who have thicker necks and narrower airways, smoking, and drinking, and those who have chronic respiratory infections. Certain medications can also increase your likelihood of having it.

While sleep apnea seems merely annoying, it’s far worse than that and can be deadly if left untreated. Problems that can arise from sleep apnea include depression, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart attack, stroke, liver problems, and death. That’s why it’s so important to seek out immediate treatment if you have been told that you’re snoring at night or experiencing any of the other symptoms of this condition. If we diagnose you with sleep apnea, we have several options we can use to help treat it. We may advise a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy for you, a nighttime oral appliance to help keep your airway open, or in more severe cases, surgery.
