Types of Dental Implants
Thanks to their many benefits, dental implants have become the industry standard to replace missing teeth. These days, implants come in different sizes, heights, and types. We here at Excellent Dental Specialists can help you determine which implant type is right for you, depending on your circumstance. Whether you are missing one tooth, or many teeth, we can help!
Consultation AppointmentDr. Andrew Weber and Dr. Kent Hamilton we ask you to schedule a consultation appointment to determine which type of implant is right for you. During your consultation, we will perform an extensive examination of your teeth and gum tissues. This may include photographs, X-rays, and CBCT scans to ensure you are a suitable candidate. Patients with good standing oral and overall health usually qualify for implant treatment. We will need to address any dental problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease before we place an implant.
The success of most implant procedures depends on the structure of your jawbone. Patients with bone that is too soft or too thin may not initially qualify for implant treatment. For these patients, we may suggest a bone graft, ridge augmentation, or sinus lift based on the location of the missing tooth.
Two Main Types of ImplantsThere are two main types of implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are the most common type of implants. Usually, endosteal implants are made of titanium and shaped like small screws or posts. During a minor surgery, we deeply embed the endosteal screw into the jawbone.
Subperiosteal implants are placed underneath the gum tissue, but above or on the jawbone. This type of implant is usually reserved for patients with an insufficient amount of bone in the jaw that do not want to undergo a bone augmentation procedure.
All-on-4 and TrefoilAt Excellent Dental Specialists, we offer the very best in implant treatment for full arch replacements. We choose to specialize in Nobel Biocare products because they are the industry leader for implant technology. Nobel Biocare is responsible for the All-on-4 Treatment Concept and Trefoil treatment concepts. These treatment concepts have revolutionized the way we replace a full arch of missing teeth.
All-on-4, as the name suggests, is a treatment concept that only uses four implants to support a full arch restoration. Most full arch restorations require anywhere from four to eight implants per arch. All-on-4 is minimally invasive because it utilizes existing bone structure with tilted implants. In most cases, the posterior implant screws are placed at a 35 to 45-degree angle to maximize support. This concept also eliminates the need for pre-operative bone augmentation procedures.
Recently, Nobel Biocare introduced an even less invasive treatment concept known as Trefoil. The Trefoil system only requires three implants per arch. These three implants support a pre-fabricated framework that is designed to fit your specific jawbone. The success of Trefoil is largely due to its adaptive joint attachment system and the use of guided surgery tactics.
