Dental Implants
San Antonio, TX

Missing teeth can be replaced with a permanent solution that will look, feel and function like your natural teeth. Increasingly, more and more of our patients are having their missing teeth replaced with a dental implant solution. Whether you are missing a single tooth, a few teeth, or an entire mouthful, we can develop a treatment plan that is right for you. Our team at Excellent Dental Specialists will evaluate your oral health, and make recommendations for you based on your needs, your finances, and your medical requirements.

How do dental implants replace missing teeth?

Dental implants serve as a permanent, solid base for a dental crown to be fitted on. Following an evaluation and customized treatment planning, we will surgically place a titanium post into your jawbone, which serves as a new tooth root. The process from start to finish can be long, but the result is a beautiful tooth where one was previously missing. This will improve both the functionality and aesthetic look of your smile.

There are multiple steps that we take during the implant process. Watch the video below, and then read the steps we use here at Excellent Dental Specialists.

Identifying the Candidate:
The main criteria for being a candidate for a dental implant is missing one or more teeth. In addition, there are some factors that can limit the success of an implant placement, including the health of the patient. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes and patients who smoke tobacco have been found to have a decrease in their ability to heal. This along with certain medications may also limit their candidacy. We ask that you discuss your entire medical history with our doctors for a complete exam.

When you lose a tooth there is an immediate reaction in your bone of atrophy. Your bone is a living tissue that responds to a lack of use by immediately pulling in its resources through resorption. This means that there may be insufficient bone to place the implant. We can resolve this issue with a bone graft.

Bone Graft:
A bone graft is a simple procedure of placing bone material in the empty socket where it can regrow bone. We use bone from one of four different sources:
1.  Bone from the patient, usually their chin.
2.  Bone from a donated human source.
3.  Bone from a donated animal source, usually a cow.
4.  Bone material that is synthetic.

After we place this bone material, a waiting period of several months is needed for the new bone to grow.

With the bone ready, we then schedule an appointment for placement. After administering anesthetic, we use a specialized drill to create the space needed in the jawbone. We then place the titanium implant. We use titanium because it is biocompatible, meaning it has the unique ability to not be rejected by your body, and your living tissue is willing to grow around and on it, incorporating it in with your bone and creating a strong and permanent bond. Once placed, we will need to allow for about three months healing.

Placing the Crown:
With the post now firmly in place, we will customize a dental crown for a perfect fit. Once the dental crown is created and fitted, you are left with a new tooth that will provide you the function and look you want. No more adjusting how or what you eat, or feeling the need to hide your smile.
