Are Dentures Right for Me?

Dentures sitting on a table at Excellent Dental Specialists.Nobody wants to lose their teeth. It can be an embarrassing and uncomfortable experience, which is why Excellent Dental Specialists offers several tooth replacement options, including dentures. Dentures can be an easy and inexpensive way to replace your smile!

A denture is a removable appliance designed to replace an entire arch of missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Most dentures consist of prosthetic teeth that are set in a pink-colored acrylic base. If the denture is for the upper jaw, the base usually extends over the palate. If the denture is for the lower jaw, the base is usually horseshoe shaped to accommodate the tongue.
In the past, dentures were rough, uncomfortable, and esthetically-displeasing. These days, dentures are much more comfortable and virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Ideal Candidate for Dentures

Dentures are most common for older patients whose teeth have endured a lifetime of wear and tear. Replacing deteriorated teeth can alleviate pain, eradicate persistent root infections, and make your overall quality of life better! However, we will do everything we can to save your natural teeth. Dentures are considered to be the last resort.

If you are missing all or most of your teeth, you may be an ideal candidate for dentures. Ideal candidates are also non-smokers and dedicated to good oral hygiene. We may recommend dentures if you do not have enough bone in the jaw to properly support dental implants. Dentures may also be a great option if you are concerned about cost, as they are one of the most inexpensive treatments available for replacing missing teeth.

During your consultation visit, Dr. Andrew Weber and Dr. Kent Hamilton will determine whether or not dentures are right for you. The denture process requires your active participation. Be sure to ask any question you may have and voice concerns.

Getting Used to Your New Dentures

Getting used to your new dentures may take some time. For the first few weeks, your new teeth may feel awkward or uncomfortable. It is not unusual to experience some minor irritation or soreness. Chewing and eating food may also take a little practice. It helps to chew foods on both sides of your mouth to keep your dentures from tipping. As you become accustomed to chewing and speaking with your new dentures, the muscles in your cheeks and mouth will become stronger. As your mouth adjusts, these problems should fade away. It is important to remember that your adjustment period will not last forever.

Caring for Your Dentures

There are a few care tips that can increase the longevity of your dentures. When handling your dentures, exercise caution. We recommend standing over a folded towel or basin of water. You should also remove and rinse your dentures after meals. Be sure to soak and brush your dentures using a pre-approved cleanser. Keeping your dentures clean can help you avoid infections.

Regular dental checkups can ensure a proper fit and prevent embarrassing slips. We may need to readjust or reline your dentures if they become loose. If you have any questions about denture care, do not hesitate to call us!
